Melbourne Metro – Will it have an impact on rail and road transport in the West?

Melbourne Metro cross-city tunnel

Taken from the Public Transport Victoria Government website. Below are the basics of what the project is and how it will impact rail to the western suburbs.

"What is Melbourne Metro?
Melbourne Metro is a critical city-shaping project that will overhaul Melbourne's rail network, resulting in major improvements in capacity, reliability and travel times across the bulk of the metropolitan rail lines.
The Melbourne Metro project includes the construction of a nine-kilometre rail tunnel through inner Melbourne, connecting the Sunbury and Pakenham/Cranbourne rail lines.
The rail tunnel will also include five new underground railway stations – Arden, Parkville, CBD North, CBD South, and Domain. These new stations will significantly decrease congestion at existing inner city stations and allow commuters to access the Parkville and St Kilda Road precincts by heavy rail for the first time."

"What changes will occur to services on the Sunbury line?
A new Sunbury-Dandenong Line will be created, which will link the Sunbury and Dandenong lines through the new Melbourne Metro tunnel. The project will provide frequency and reliability improvements for passengers using these lines.
Passengers will be able to interchange with other rail and tram lines on the network at the new CBD South and CBD North stations, which will be connected to Flinders Street and Melbourne Central stations via underground concourses. Tram and bus interchanges will also be provided at Parkville and Domain."

"What changes will occur to the Sandringham, Williamstown and Werribee lines?
A Cross-City Line will be created which will link the Werribee and Williamstown lines with the Sandringham line via Southern Cross and Flinders Street stations. The project will provide frequency and reliability improvements for passengers using these lines.
Passengers on the Cross-City Line will be able to access the new Sunbury-Dandenong Line (including new stations at Domain, Parkville and Arden) by interchanging at Footscray or at Flinders Street station which will be connected to the new CBD South station via an underground concourse."

The ALP expressed support for this project if it wins the federal elections. Does this project get your backing? Is it a better alternative to the East-West Link?
